Our Story

This site was born out of Private Equity Vet, a site we founded in early 2024 after our late dog, Pluto, was treated at practice recently acquired by a PE-backed consolidator. Private Equity Vet’s goal was to bring full transparency of corporate/PE ownership of veterinary practices. Independent Vet was established to answer the question we got every day from visitors of Private Equity Vet - how can I find a locally-owned independent vet?

After much work to establish an initial dataset, the site was launched in 2026. There is still much work to do in verifying independent practices, but thanks to community contributions we’re gradually getting there! Both the corporate and independent lists are actively maintained and cross-checked whenever changes are made, making this the most accurate and complete dataset of its kind. Data accuracy remains our highest priority and we encourage you to reach out if you see any areas for improvement. Updates are applied on an almost daily basis and much of our review process is made possible with frontier AI models that have been trained to sift through data with our oversight.

Our goal with Independent Vet is to give pet parents easy access to transparent information on who owns their local veterinary practices. We’ve also realized that by bringing together a fragmented independent veterinary community, there may be opportunities to provide additional support - so we’re all ears on how we might be able to help!

The site is run entirely by volunteers and is self-funded. There is no commercial interest, the only interest is in helping pet parents get the best possible care for their loved ones. Thanks for visiting!
